Tesco has launched an attack on Sainsbury‘s with its price promise aiming to rival Argos over the holiday period.

Following a promise from Tesco UK boss Matt Davies earlier this week to “do everything we can” to keep prices low, the country‘s biggest supermarket has pledged to match Argos‘s prices on 8000 toys this Christmas.

Releasing a 123-page toy catalogue which it will distribute in 900 of its UK stores, the grocer has launched a direct contest to Argos, acquired by Sainsbury‘s last month for £1.4 billion.

Davies said of the new campaign “We want to take the hard work out of Christmas shopping and help our customers get everything they need under one roof.”

Sainsbury’s will see an Argos outlet or collection point in every one of its stores within the next few years, going from 13 to 30 by Christmas.

The increasing price war between the big four and competition from both discounters Aldi and Lidl, as well as companies like Amazon entering the grocery game, have seen the two retailers aim to reposition themselves to appeal to a wider audience.
