Stationery retailer Paperchase has announced plans to open its first bricks-and-mortar stores in the US next year.

Starting off with two standalone shops in Chicago, the news comes after the retailer announced UK sales had grown by 12 per cent.

This year alone, Paperchase opened 23 stores – nine of which were outside the UK.

The greetings card retailer currently sells cards in Target and Staples in the US, but it has no standalone stores.

The retailer was previously owned by former US bookstore chain Borders, which sold it in 2009 for £20 million.

Paperchase‘s underlying earnings grew by 25 per cent last year to £10.8 million, while UK like-for-like sales grew by 4.9 per cent and total sales lifted to £136 million.
