Selfridges has revealed plans to dedicate a space in its iconic London flagship store that will become the world’s largest shopping area for women’s fashion accessories. 

The Oxford Street department store is set to create 60,000sq ft of space containing more than 70,000 handbags and other accessories by 2018. 

According to Selfridges, the plan comprises of tripling the current space “into the ultimate global destination for luxury accessories”.

Designed in collaboration with architect David Chipperfield, the space not have internal dividing walls and will open in three main phases over the next two years, with completion slated for late spring 2018.

The London flagship‘s Duke Street facade is also in the process of a major facelift, with a triple-height entrance and design to capitalise on its proximity to the Bond Street Crossrail station due to open in December 2018.

Selfridges said the grand plan was created based on the ambition of founder Harry Gordon Selfridge to create a unified quadrant within the Oxford, Orchard, Wigmore and Duke streets.

“We are thrilled to be unveiling the first phase of our Accessories Hall, which represents the first major externally visible milestone in the ambitious transformation of the Duke Street side of our store,” a spokesperson said.

“It’s the first time in 40 years that such dramatic architectural changes designed to challenge how our customers experience this part of our store, on both sides of the facade, are being undertaken.”

The price tag of the refurbishment project “in excess of £300 million”, according to Selfridges.
