The UK‘s second largest supermarket retailer has announced a significant pay rise for its colleagues, bringing the base rate of pay to £8 per hour.
Today Sainsbury‘s announced a 4.4 per cent pay increase for 135,000 colleagues, including those under 25.
The wage increase is set to come into effect on August 27 and comes alongside a shared bonus across the group of £78 million this year.
“We‘re pleased to announce a 4.4% pay increase for colleagues working in Sainsbury‘s stores across the country,” Sainsbury‘s chief executive Mike Coupe said.
“This is the third successive year that we have awarded eligible store colleagues a pay rise of four per cent or more and recognises their hard work and dedication.

“We know what a difference this makes to our customers and we‘re committed to rewarding them well for the great service they provide.”
Sainsbury’s pay rate compares to Aldi‘s base rate for store assistants at £8.48, Lidl‘s base rate for store assistants and customer assistants at £7.84 and £8.20 respectively.
Its biggest rival Tesco pays customer assistants £7.52 per hour, while Morrisons pays sales assistants £7.24 per hour and Asda pays shop floor assistants £7.23 per hour.
