Oxford Street Christmas lights to be switched on November 7

The yearly tradition of decorating Oxford Street with Christmas lights may have already started but they won’t officially be switched on until November 7.

The 58th annual Oxford Street Christmas Lights Switch On marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season and for the  second year in a row, it will partner with children’s charity NSPCC.

The event will aim to raise funds for Childline to ensure the service remains accessible to all young people who need to reach out for help and advice.

Last year’s Christmas lights saw London’s world-famous shopping destination welcome a total footfall of 43.9 million during the Christmas season and 1.14 million during the lights switch on event.

The switch on and lights display, which is organised by management and promotional company New West End Company, is also supported by over 300 Oxford Street retailers.

The street decorations will comprise of 750,000 LED bulbs, which use 75 per cent less energy than conventional bulbs.

This year’s scheme is inspired by falling snow flakes, which will see the whole mile of Oxford Street covered in a blanket of white lights and 1,778 baubles.
