Tesco lays off 1700 in latest cost cutting drive

1700 shop floor jobs have been cut at Tesco as it seeks to “simplify” its experience for customers and colleagues while slashing costs.

The UK’s largest retailer stated that the “difficult changes” woild see large stores do away with people manager, customer experience manager and compliance manager roles completely.

Tesco added it would attempt to find alternative roles for those affected by the cuts.

“These changes remove complexity and will deliver a simpler, more helpful experience for colleagues and customers,” Tesco UK boss Matt Davies said.

“We recognise these are difficult changes to make but they are necessary to ensure our business remains competitive and set up for the future.

“Our priority now is to support affected colleagues through these changes in any way we can.

“We hope to retain as many colleagues as possible in the new roles we have created and in the vacancies we currently have available.”

Nine hundred new roles will reportedly be created under new titles, including people partners, learning partners and colleague relations partners.

More than 10,000 jobs have been cut at Tesco under chief executive Dave Lewis, who is guiding Tesco through a turnaround effort following an accounting scandal in 2014.

According to its latest trading update, third quarter like-for-like sales in the UK grew by 2.3 per cent – representing Tesco’s eighth consecutive quarter of growth – while total sales grew 2.5 per cent.
