UK alcohol retail prices 42% over the EU average

Shoppers in the UK pay 42.7 per cent more for alcohol than average European prices, making it the fourth-highest in the EU.

According to new analysis from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) only Ireland, Sweden and Finland pay more for alcohol.

This follows continuing price increases driven by suppliers ramping up costs due to the weakened value of the sterling.

The Wine and Spirit Trade Association added that the retail price of wine and spirits rose by four per cent in the year to September 2017.

Despite this major alcohol retailer Conviviality, which owns Bargain Booze and the Wine Rack, saw revenues rise 9.2 per cent for the six months to October 29.
