Aldi recalls nearly 40,000 items after “half a rat” found in pack of vegetables

Aldi has recalled thousands of packs of frozen vegetables after half of a dead rat was found inside one of the packages.

Thirty-eight thousand packs of mixed frozen vegetables have been recalled after customer Pat Bateman wrote to Aldi’s head office with photos of “half a rat” she had pulled from the bag.

Bateman had reportedly approached the discount retailer’s head office after being dissatisfied with the £30 in compensation offered by her local store.

The 60-year-old was subsequently awarded £500 in compensation by Aldi’s head office but has said this doesn’t go far enough.

Aldi released a statement saying it had “removed this product from sale to prevent any further issues” and “suspended all orders from this production site whilst we investigate this matter”.

“It was nearly empty so that’s why I spotted something that looked out of place in the bottom of the bag,” Bateman told The Sun.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes when I pulled it out. It just looked like half a rat. It had fur on it.

“I showed my husband and because it was frozen we left it to defrost before taking another look at it.

“We had eaten almost all of the bag before we saw it – and what’s even worse – I fed it to my youngest granddaughter.”

The vegetables came from Belgium based fruit and vegetable wholesaler Agrifreeze.
