Morrisons has become the final member of the Big 4 to commit to doing away with single-use plastic bags.
In an effort to reduce plastic waste, the grocer is set to stop selling 5p plastic bags by the end of the year, starting from March.
This follows hot on the heels of the same pledge from Asda earlier this week, while Tesco committed to scrapping single-use bags last year.
Sainsbury’s stopped selling single use plastic bags back in 2015 when the 5p tax was first introduced.
Though the move has been welcomed by environmental groups, they have called on big retailers to take more action to tackle plastic waste.
“Plastic bags are just one of many types of single-use plastic crowding supermarket shelves,” a Greenpeace spokesperson told the I newspaper.
“Big retailers generate nearly 1m tonnes of plastic packaging a year, and much of it can be easily replaced with less harmful materials or phased out altogether,” she added.
Major UK supermarkets have been ramping up plastic reduction initiatives in recent months.
Co-op, Tesco and Iceland have all pledged support for a plastic bottle deposit return scheme.
Iceland also announced last month that it aimed to do away with plastic packaging entirely within the next five years.
