Amazon rebuffed by Tesco and Sainsbury’s over product deals

Amazon is understood to have held talks with both Tesco and Sainsbury’s on separate occasions in an effort to secure a partnership and sell their goods through its platform.

According to the Press Association, Amazon and Tesco held talks roughly 18 months ago to discuss the possibility of selling the grocer’s F&F fashion range through its site.

Despite Tesco confirming these talks took place, it added that they ultimately led to nothing.

Amazon was reportedly also rebuffed by Sainsbury’s over similar proposals well before it announced its landmark tie-up with Asda.

Sources said that Sainsbury’s saw the potential deal as competitively disadvantageous.

This comes amid fervent speculation that Amazon is considering making a push into the UK’s physical grocery market.

Last week analysts at TCC Global suggested that Amazon could make a bid for Morrisons, which it already has supplier deal with, in light of the recent consolidation in the sector.

Just days before, John Lewis Partnership publicly denied reports from the Sunday Times that Amazon had approached the department store to discuss a possible takeover of Waitrose.

Amazon has already made its intentions to enter the physical grocery market clear with its £10 billion acquisition of Whole Foods last year.

Sainsbury’s and Amazon declined to comment.
