Fashion offsets falling sales at John Lewis

John Lewis Partnership has enjoyed rising sales over the past week, with the sunny weather driving up fashion sales, while Waitrose continued its recovery.

The group saw sales rise 0.3 per cent to £215.86 million year-on-year.

This was buoyed by an 0.8 per cent rise in sales at Waitrose, offsetting an overall 0.3 per cent fall at John Lewis.

Although Waitrose’s growth slowed from 7.4 per cent a week prior, it saw frozen and dairy food sales jump eight per cent, while fresh food sales rose 3.4 per cent.

Sales of prawns also saw a massive 350 per cent boost, thanks to the release of its new Beautifully Simple recipes campaign.

Meanwhile, department store John Lewis saw a minor sales dip, attributing this in part to the May bank holiday falling a week earlier last year.

Despite this, fashion saw jumped two per cent, with menswear and womenswear sales up 8.2 per cent.

Shoppers also reacted to the sunny weather at the start of the week driving summer clothing sales up 18 per cent, while sales of womens shoes had a record week with a 30 per cent increase.
