John Lewis signs up for £1.4bn Brent Cross expansion

John Lewis has signed a new lease to regenerate its 40-year-old department store at Brent Cross, as the north London shopping centre begins a £1.4 billion redevelopment.

According to the Guardian, John Lewis’ site at Brent Cross will be undertaking a major overhaul as Brent Cross looks to double the size of its centre to meet customer demand.

John Lewis, Fenwick and Marks & Spencer will all have anchor stores at the refurbished and expanded Brent Cross.

John Lewis store design and development director Tim Harrison said the retailer was “delighted to have signed a new lease with Hammerson and Aberdeen Standard Investments and are excited to be embarking on a full refurbishment of our Brent Cross shop”.

He added: “Our plans will allow us to showcase our latest thinking in shop design, creating a more modern space for shoppers with customer experience at its heart.”

The new-look Brent Cross will also include 150 new shops, 50 new restaurants and new leisure attractions, such as hotel accommodation, in order to appeal to “destination-shoppers”.

Operated by retail property giant Hammerson, Brent Cross was first opened in 1976 and was one of the first retail destinations in the UK to emulate the US-style, major shopping centre format.
