Poundland has publicly slammed Boots for “overcharging” customers, launching a public campaign to highlight the cost differences between the two.
Last weekend it was reported that the government had called on the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to launch a probe into Boots over allegations it was overcharging the NHS up to 3000 per cent for unlicensed medicines known as specials.
The discount retailer has seized the opportunity and has now accused the health retailer of overcharging both the NHS and customers, launching a campaign called “Give High Prices the Boot”.
Protesters with Poundland placards displaying the cost disparities between the same items at both retailers gathered outside Boots stores, and Poundland has put up window posters across all its 800 stores.
The items include 30-pack Loratadine Hayfever and Allergy Tablets which costs £5.77 at Boots, Nivea Soft Moisturising Cream 75ml costing £2.45 at Boots and Exfoliating Gloves costing £3 at Boots, all costing £1 at Poundland.
“It’s not just the NHS that is getting overcharged by Boots – ordinary shoppers are too on the items they use every day,” Poundland managing director Barry Williams said.
“We know our customers are tired of paying more for health and beauty basics, so we’ve been working hard with our suppliers to bring value to the shelves.
“We’re committed to making sure our shoppers get the best value for money, and with our growing health and beauty range, we’re making a difference.
“Giving high prices the boot across everyday wellness essentials is the latest way we’re fighting unfair pricing on the high street.”
After an investigation by The Times found Boots hiking prices on NHS medications, including charging as much as £1579 for medications sold elsewhere for £1.73, a spokesperson from the retailer responded with:
“Specials are unique items ordered at short notice.
“They are made by highly trained technicians in dedicated laboratories in the UK that source ingredients, produce and quality-check often on the same day, and as a single item.
“This process incurs high overheads, reflected in the final cost, which is set in line with the sector to reflect the bespoke nature of the products.”
