Poundworld staff given free sandwiches ahead of store closures

Poundworld staff are reportedly being given free sandwiches ahead of the likely loss of their jobs as administrators to the retailer prepare to start closing stores.

The budget retailer fell into administration on June 11, putting around 5,100 jobs at risk.

Administrators at Deloitte have so far failed to find a buyer for the beleaguered chain, although they are reportedly in talks with Poundworld founder Chris Edwards about selling a proportion of the store estate.

According to sources speaking to Press Association, Deloitte told store managers on Thursday that they should buy their staff lunch to cheer them up as they fear for their jobs.

In a note to managers sent yesterday, the administrators said every store could spend £50 on lunch – an estimated cost of £16,750 to the business.

There is speculation that 150 Poundworld stores will close down, even of Edwards agrees to a rescue deal.

The administrators have already made 100 people redundant at retailer’s Yorkshire head office.
