Aldi opens 8 new stores in one day

Aldi has opened eight stores on a single day, which it claims to be a record, as it gears up for its biggest-ever Christmas.

The new stores in Glasgow, Chellaston, Eckington, Longridge, Oldham, Skelton, Bodmin and Islington in London are part of a tranche of 24 new Aldis opening throughout November and December.

The discount grocer is also upgrading three existing stores through its Project Fresh refurbishment programme during this time.

Aldi said that the store openings in the final two months of the year will create around 840 new jobs and are part of its long-term target of 1200 UK stores by 2025.

“We’ve stepped up our store opening programme in the run-up to Christmas so that more shoppers can enjoy fantastic quality products, at prices they can afford, throughout the festive period,” Aldi UK chief executive Giles Hurley said.

He added: “With new stores opening right across the country, stocking our largest-ever festive range, we’re all set to help our customers enjoy an amazing Christmas.”

The German brand has opened over 70 new stores in the UK during 2018 and currently has more than 800 stores across the country.

The supermarket’s share of the UK grocery market currently stands at an all-time high of 7.6 per cent, making it the fifth-biggest retailer in the UK grocery sector.
