With Valentine’s Day now a week away, Poundland has revealed that 20,000 of its engagement rings were sold in just a week.

The budget retailer’s “Bling Ring” range, which are marketed as so-called placeholder rings, created an uproar when they appeared on sale last month.

Poundland capitalised on consumers’ anticipation leading up to Valentine’s Day by putting its rings on sale a month ago.

“Thousands of Brits are already quids in thanks to the £1 proposal,” Poundland’s jewellery and Valentines buyer Frances O’Sullivan said.

Poundland said the aim of the ring was to allow one partner to propose with the placeholder before the couple were able to afford a traditional ring.

The rings have proved popular in Yorkshire and the Midlands as they saw the strongest sales during launch week, according to Poundland.
