Lidl has announced that its Too Good To Waste wonky fruit and vegetable boxes will officially launch in England, Scotland and Wales stores after a successful trial.
Customers will be paying £1.50 for a 5kg box, which contains slightly damaged and deteriorated but still edible fruits and vegetables from the stores’ shelves.
The discount grocer aims to cut down on food waste by choosing this initiative.
The trial, which launched in August, gradually extended to 122 stores and saw the supermarket sell over 50,000 boxes.
Lidl’s Freshness Specialists will gather the selection each day for customers and will be placing them for sale from opening time to midday.
Meanwhile, leftover boxes will be sent to Lidl’s surplus food redistribution programme Feed It Back.
“It’s a great example of how we, as discounter, can utilise our lean and efficient business model to fulfil our mission to make good, healthy food more affordable and accessible, whilst acting sustainably,” Lidl GB chief executive Christian Härtnagel said.
In 2017, Lidl said it would cut back on food waste by 25 per cent by 2020 and committed to the Sustainable Development Goals’ 12.3 target of 50 per cent by 2030.
