100 Asos jobs at threat as sales drop

// 100 Asos HQ jobs at threat as company battles slumping sales
// Many are employed in its marketing department
// Asos issued a profit warning in December, saying it had suffered a “significant deterioration” in pre-Christmas trading

Asos’ London head office employees face the risk of losing their jobs as the online retailer becomes the latest victim of slumping sales.

Around 100 staff may face redundancies as the Asos launches a consultation with them, many of whom are employed in the marketing department, The Sunday Times reports.

Asos issued a profit warning in December, saying it had suffered a “significant deterioration” in pre-Christmas trading, which sent shares plummeting by around 40 per cent.

Its pre-tax profit plunged 87 per cent in March when it revealed half year results.

Furthermore, the retailer changed its free returns policy earlier this year, announcing it will crack down on “serial returners” in a bid to reduce costs.

“These guys are treating the Asos proposition sometimes, regrettably, as a rental service,” Asos chief executive Nick Beighton said.
