Tesco has been asked to remove a photo of Spice Girl Mel B from its Clubcard Plus campaign.

The photo, which features Mel B performing at the Brit Awards in 1997, was taken down after the pop star took to Instagram to call out Tesco’s chief executive Dave Lewis.

Tesco used the image to market its new Clubcard Plus programme, which offers shoppers a 10 per cent discount for a £7.99 monthly fee.

The advert, which was featured on a bus stop, read: “Stop right now. You get 10 per cent off two big shops a month for £7.99.”

The message was a play on words from the Spice Girls’ hit single Stop, which contains the lyrics “Stop right now”.

Mel B posted an image of the bus stop advert on Instagram and wrote: “Can the CEO OF TESCO DAVE LEWIS PLEASE CONTACT ME URGENTLY. Thank you.”

“Here at Tesco we are really big fans of Mel B and were excited to feature her photo in our campaign,” A Tesco spokesman said.

“We had authorisation to use this image, but we’re sorry Mel B is unhappy so we’ve stopped using it.”

Other celebrities, including comedy duo Morecambe and Wise, have been used in the campaign.
