Hamleys is poised to announce its new chief executive after reportedly hiring former Debenhams and The Body Shop executive David Smith to take on the role.

According to Sky News, the heritage toy retailer is expected to announce the news of the hire this week.

Smith once held the position of head of international operations at Debenhams, and is also the former managing director of The Body Shop’s Asia Pacific division.

Hamleys was acquired by Indian retail giant Reliance Retail last summer in a £70 million deal from Chinese firm C.banner International.

C.Banner had bought Hamleys for £99.9 million in 2015.

Reliance Retail has previously indicated that expansion and a reinvigoration of its London flagship store are now on the cards for Hamleys.
