Marks & Spencer has appointed the former Debenhams director Sarah Savva as its new business lead of brands.

Savva was most recently the project manager of new business development at Primark, and joined M&S earlier this month.

She worked at department store chain Debenhams between 1989 and 2018, working her way up from finance controller to become director of external business in 2011.

The appointment comes after M&S chief executive Steve Rowe announced in May that he plans to enlist the power of complementary fashion and home labels to “turbo-charge” the retailer’s ecommerce offering.

In early June, M&S launched its ‘Never The Same Again’ programme at its AGM because “we want to come back from the crisis a changed business, a faster business”.

M&S chairman Archie Norman said the aim of the initiative is to work three years into one.

At its AGM, M&S also announced the appointment of two new board members.

The chairman of advertising agency Wunderman Thompson, Tamara Ingram joined the board as non executive director, while the international clients and market development group director of food services Compass Group, Sapna Sood, also joined as non executive director.
