Tesco is reportedly reinstating rationing rules on essential items to ensure customers buy only what they need, as Covid-19 infections continue to increase in the UK.
The grocer’s chief executive Dave Lewis said earlier in the week that stock is plentiful and there is no need for “unnecessary” panic buying, following the government’s tightened restrictions.
Tesco will now be selling three items per customer limit on flour, dried pasta, toilet roll, baby wipes and antibacterial wipes a day, Sky News reported.

The new rule reflects the March lockdown which saw grocers across the UK introduce temporary restrictions to avoid their shelves being stripped bare of essentials.
Tesco said its restrictions applied to all stores and online sales though digital orders would also see limits on a number of additional items such as rice and canned vegetables.
The retailer added that there is “good availability, with plenty of stock to go round”.
Meanwhile, Morrisons has also reinstated the rationing rule on products such as toilet roll, disinfectants and bleach to a maximum of three.
The Big 4 supermarket announced on Thursday that customers will be given a purchase limit of three on certain products so they are “available for everyone”.
Morrisons also reinstated door marshals to its 494 stores to monitor shopper numbers and remind those entering to wear face masks.
