Asda has officially opened its first sit-in Greggs café, at its new £21 million store in the East Midlands.

The grocer first revealed plans to launch the café in February at the Worksop store.

The café will offer vegan sausage rolls and other Greggs foods such as breakfast rolls, sandwiches and wraps, pasta salads, sweet treats, cold drinks and Fairtrade coffee.

Greggs will also trial shop-in-shops in five Asda stores in Boldon, Corby, Huyton, Eastlands and Wigan.

The Big 4 retailer already works with McDonald’s, Sushi Daily and Just Eat in a number of stores across the UK.

The 37,000sq ft store features a range of food-to-go concepts, as Asda ramps up its partnerships with out-of-home companies.

Worksop is also one of the first Asda stores to receive enhanced safety measures, including additional hand sanitiser and cleaning stations at the front of the store.

“We’re delighted to officially open our Worksop superstore and to have been selected to launch a number of ‘firsts’ for Asda including a brilliant range of food for now options,” Asda Worksop store manager Craig Loveday said.

Separately, Asda opened its brand new sustainability concept store in Leeds on Tuesday, featuring product refill options, loose and unwrapped produce and a pledge that “customers will not pay more for greener options”.

The opening of the pilot store in Middleton was accompanied by a new plastics reduction strategy that aims to remove three billion pieces of plastic from Asda’s own-brand products by 2025.
