Aldi extends food donations scheme to those in need on NYE

// Aldi to extend Christmas Eve food donations scheme to New Year’s Eve as well
// Aldi expects to donate a further 200,000 meals throughout the country as a result
// Since 2018, it has donated unsold fresh & chilled food to charitable causes after stores close on Christmas Eve

Aldi has announced that will build on its successful Christmas food donations programme by donating to those in need on New Year’s Eve as well.

Since 2018, the German grocery chain has donated unsold fresh and chilled food to charitable causes after stores close on Christmas Eve.

For the first time, its 906 stores in the UK will now be inviting charity partners to collect unsold food on New Year’s Eve as well, when Aldi expects to donate a further 200,000 meals throughout the country.

With the help of Neighbourly, a community giving platform that links businesses to charitable organisations, Aldi is also launching a Community Cupboard initiative.

This will prioritise donations to local community groups focused on feeding children over the forthcoming Christmas school holiday – and will do so again during the February half-term and Easter breaks.

Aldi said it expected its extended programme to lead to a record number of meals being donated over the festive season.

“Access to fresh, affordable food should be a right, not a privilege, which is why we’re doing what we can to help those in need,” Aldi UK corporate responsibility managing director Luke Peech said.

“Tackling food poverty is an issue that the country and our store colleagues are really behind, so it’s great to be extending our programme – particularly over the festive period and upcoming school holidays.”
