Small & indie retailers hope to capitalise on lockdown end with Small Business Saturday

// Hopes for trading boost from annual Small Business Saturday campaign this weekend
// Organisers of the event hope to capitalise on the end of lockdown in England as shoppers flock to the high street

An annual event celebrating small businesses on the high street is hoping to capitalise on the end of England’s national lockdown, as people flock back to re-opened shops.

Small Business Saturday is being held this weekend, under efforts every year to encourage people to support small and independent retailers and shop in their local area.

The group behind the campaign said its research showed that three out of five people supported small retailers more than previously, following the role they played in communities during Covid-19 lockdowns.

“Small Business Saturday is not just one event but millions of actions taken by all of us, which add up to one big impact to boost small businesses at this difficult time,” Small Business Saturday director Michelle Ovens said.

“More than ever, it is a key moment to shine a spotlight on small businesses and the important contribution they make to our nation.

“This year, we are encouraging people to show their support not just on Small Business Saturday itself but in the coming weeks, months and beyond, in all the different ways they can safely.”

Small Business Minister Paul Scully said: “Now more than ever it is vital that people get behind their local businesses, whether by popping in to get Christmas presents, ordering essentials online, or getting a takeaway from their favourite cafe or restaurant.

“Small businesses are the beating heart of our local communities and this year we want Small Business Saturday to give them the boost they need to carry them into the New Year, as we look to build back better from coronavirus.”

Northern Ireland and 11 council areas across Scotland will remain in lockdown when Small Business Saturday takes place this weekend,
