Tesco has revealed it will be updating its self-scan checkouts to provide an “even better” service for Welsh customers amid concerns that the voice commands had been limited to English only.
In recent weeks, Welsh-speaking shoppers had taken to Twitter to air their disappointment, with local customers identifying the problem at stores including in Caernarfon and Llandudno Junction.
The latest concern was shared by a customer under the username @Ffyncwraig who said: “Why are your self pay tills voice commands in English even when Cymraeg is chosen?”
They asked Tesco to amend its machines so that both the text and voice match the chosen language.
A spokesperson for the supermarket tweeted back: “I’ve been advised that our Self-Scan checkouts will be updated with the Welsh Language in the appropriate stores in due course but we don’t yet have an ETA.”
North Wales Live received comment from a Tesco spokesperson who confirmed that all self-service checkouts in Wales will soon include a Welsh voice option.
“It is important for us to give our Welsh-speaking customers good service, and we were the first supermarket to introduce a Welsh language option on self-service checkouts,” the spokesperson told the publication.
In their statement, the grocer said: “We are currently in the process of updating all our self-service checkouts to provide an even better user experience for our Welsh customers.”
“[We’re] recording a new Welsh language voice for our self-service tills in all Welsh stores.”
