Decathlon finally closes Russian stores after boycott calls

// Decathlon will finally close its 60 Russia stores after a backlash from consumers
// The retailer said that “supply conditions are no longer met” for it to continue trading in the country

Decathlon has finally suspended its Russian business after a backlash from global consumers, however, the sportswear giant’s decision to pull out of the country is down to supply chain disruption.

The French sportswear giant, which operates 60 stores in the country, had resisted calls to pull out of Russia in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine despite swathes of western brands including Ikea, Apple, and Zara suspending their Russian businesses.

Decathlon said:In the dramatic context of Ukraine, we are following the evolution of events and particularly the situation of those directly affected.

“In strict compliance with international sanctions, Decathlon notes that the supply conditions are no longer met to continue its activity in Russia. Decathlon has to suspend the operation of its stores.”

Decathlon owner, French retail giant Association Familiale Mulliez, which also operates supermarket Auchan and DIY chain Leroy Merlin in Russia, has been criticised for its decision to remain open.

The bosses of Leroy Merlin had even set out plans to expand in Russia, capitalising on its position as one of the few western brands left trading in the country.

According to The Telegraph, the letter read: “Since the disappearance of certain companies from the market, we are open to your proposals on the increase of supply and the increase of your assortment of products.

“In the next three to four months we plan to fully replace imported products with those produced in Russia.”

However, global consumers have taken a stand against the retail group with protesters in Poland standing outside of Decathlon, Auchan and Leroy Merlin stores holding photos of victims of the war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba had also called for shoppers to shun the businesses.
