Banana Republic to permanently close UK website

// Fashion retailer Banana Republic will be closing its UK website on the 31 May
// The website has introduced a 60% “customer appreciation” sale to clear excess stock

Banana Republic has announced it is permanently closing its UK and EU website on May 31st.

The business announced the news on its website, encouraging shopping to continue purchasing as normal until then. The website has also introduced a 60% “customer appreciation” sale to clear excess stock.

The Gap-owned fashion retailer had nine stores across the UK, but made the decision to close them all in late 2016 due to falling sales and “a thorough evaluation”.

While its high street presence ended, Banana Republic continued to be available to purchase online via its own website in the UK.

The fashion retailer was first founded in 1978 and acquired by Gap Inc in 1983.

The brand was originally established in 1978 and was acquired by Gap in 1983. Gap later closed all its UK stores in 2021 and signed a franchise agreement with Next. The first of these concessions opened on Oxford Street in March.

Gap closed all of its stores in the UK and Ireland last year and signed a franchise agreement with Next which acquired 51% of its shares with Gap inc owning the remaining 49%

The deal allowed Next to open its first Gap concession in its Oxford Street flagship just last month, marking the US brand’s return to the UK high street after closing all its stores here last year.
