Waitrose and John Lewis sales surge ahead of Jubilee weekend

John Lewis and Waitrose have reported a surge in party products in the last month as people get prepared for next week’s Jubilee celebrations.

The John Lewis Partnership said the Waitrose Entertaining service is proving popular as customers look to host Jubilee-themed events at home with sales up 30% compared to last month.

Picnic food sales have also risen, with deli counter savoury pastries up 14% year on year, and quiche sales up 20% compared to last week.

Waitrose Entertaining buyer Emma Malden said: “With Waitrose Entertaining sales up 30% compared to last month, it’s clear many of us are looking to save time in the kitchen over the upcoming bank holiday and maximise the time spent with loved ones.

“Whether it’s sandwiches for a street party or cakes for a celebratory afternoon tea, our Waitrose Entertaining range has something for every Royal occasion.”

In the last week, searches for ‘Jubilee’ have been up 60% on Waitrose.com, while searches for ‘Jubilee cakes’ have surged by 165%.

At the John Lewis department store, sales of Jubilee products have tripled in the last week with sales up 208% compared to the week before.

Some of the most popular items have included garden tables, outdoor cushions and deckchairs as people prepare their gardens for outdoor parties. In addition, sales of barbecues and picnic hampers are up 153% and 57% respectively.

Meanwhile, sales of teapots and glasses have increased by a respective 317% and 124% compared to last week.
