Pret has signed a franchise deal with Reliance in India, which will see up to 100 of its sandwich shops open in the country over the next five years.

The first branch will open in Mumbai before March next year. The Indian expansion will target major cities and travel hubs and is part of Pret’s plans to double in size and launch in new markets following a £100m cash injection from owner JAB Holdings and founder Sinclair Beecham last year.

Pret has struck similar franchise deals in Spain, Portugal, Canada, Kuwait and Ireland and also plans to expand its burgeoning business in United Arab Emirates.

Reliance, India’s largest listed company, runs international franchises of brands such as Burberry, Mothercare and Jimmy Choo.

Reliance Brands Limited managing director Darshan Mehta said: “Our partnership with Pret is rooted in the strong growth potential of both Pret as a brand and also of the food and beverage industry in India.

“RBL closely follows the pulse of Indian consumers and there is an increased consciousness of what we eat, rapidly making food the new fashion… Couple that with the high recall the brand enjoys in the country, it’s undoubtedly a recipe for success.”
