Job Description

One of my clients, a well-known retailer, has recently been experiencing a period of continued growth and are therefore recruiting for Senior Merchandise Manager. This is a brand new role in the commercial function and will report into the Head of Commercial. The likelihood is that this role will grow to a ‘Head of’ position within 12-18 months. My client is keen to bring in an established Merchandising Manager that has a track record of success either within high end fashion, furniture, accessories or Food. That said, the right candidate could come from a similar function from any product area, as long as the Commercial acumen exists. Candidate requirements: - Must have bags of commercial awareness, know their own mind, lead, be grounded and have excellent negotiation and influencing skills - Someone who understands what is going on in the market, who can carry out competitor analysis and who understands that learning the operation of their business quickly is key - Must be extremely analytical with the ability to look through previous performance as well as looking to the future - They will need to have a good understanding of the transition of stock from suppliers to store/lead-times and manage the stock flow plan - This person will work closely with the Buyer with 50/50 responsibility of decision making - The Merchandise Manager will be required to look at trends, evaluate what works and what doesn’t and use this information to keep the Buying team grounded - This person will be required to meet with Suppliers either alongside the Buyer or alone so they must demonstrate excellent negotiation skills Analytical, forecasting, business sense, negotiation skills and strong influencing skills are crucial. The right candidate will be ‘second in command’ and will be exposed to Board Directors. The Merchandise Manager will have one direct report in the short term - Assistant Merchandiser - already in place. In the next 12 months a second Assistant Merchandiser is likely to be recruited. In return for this challenging position, my client is prepared to offer a salary of up to £60k with a very generous car allowance close to the £10k mark.
