HFSS: Reimagining the supermarket of the future

HFSS: Re-imagining the food store of the future

In October 2022, the Government introduced new regulations that impact display space for for high fat, salt, and sugar (HFSS) food products. The impact on retailers and brands operations, product development and bottom line is sweeping. To support this change, we have worked with the retailers and brands to create the Industry Toolkit which contains ideas on how to adapt and maximise the opportunities.

When we launched our ‘store of the future’ consultation we predicted that HFSS would impact in-store promotions at key seasonal times of the year and would make way for other categories.

Easter 2023 was going to be a big barometer of whether the drops in confectionery displays seen at Christmas would become permanent.  Six months on from HFSS’ introduction, our supermarket survey figures indicate a significant change in Easter time retail store layouts.

Download our HFSS Easter trend report for all the stats on how the regulations impacted food manufacturers and retailers.

Maximising the opportunity

There are few precedents for this monumental change, few to emulate, and no user guide. Our Industry Toolkit provides manufacturers and retailers with ideas about how they  can transform and adapt store layouts to maximise promotional space and opportunities.

You can hear the opinions on HFSS from industry experts in our short videos considering the impact on non-impacted and impacted brands, and also retailers.

We want to engage with manufacturers and retailers to develop a ‘Store of the Future Playbook’ which stimulates ideas about how the industry can adapt and transform. We have created an example of a store of the future to encourage discussion and explore opportunities. Our flythrough gives retailers and manufacturers a glimpse of what is possible.

Could these sweeping changes represent an opportunity to reimagine how food stores and brands engage with consumers?

What our experts are saying

"For non-impacted manufacturers, there is now a whole new world of opportunity as they can take space vacated by HFSS products at the front of stores, on aisle-ends and checkouts. "
