Amazon has promoted veteran Doug Herrington to head up its global retail business.

Herrington, who has been at Amazon for 17 years, replaces Dave Clark as consumer CEO.

Clark revealed earlier this month that he was leaving Amazon to join logistics technology startup Flexport as co-chief executive in September.

Herrington helped to launch Amazon Fresh in 2007 and has led the company’s North American consumer arm for more than seven years.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said: “Doug and I have worked together on ‘S-team’ [Amazon’s senior leadership team] since 2011. He is a builder of great teams and brings substantial retail, grocery, demand generation, product development, and Amazon experience to bear.

“He’s also a terrific inventor for customers, thinks big, has thoughtful vision around how category management and ops can work well together, is a unifier, is highly curious, and an avid learner.

“I think Doug will do great things for customers and employees alike, and I look forward to working with him in this leadership role.”

As part of the changes, the online retailer said it would rename its consumer division to the Worldwide Amazon Stores businesses.

Meanwhile, it emerged that two of the etailer’s most senior black leaders are leaving the retailer.

Alicia Boler Davis, the only black executive on Amazon’s S team, is leaving as senior vice president of global customer fulfillment. Boler Davis had been a key adviser to CEO Jassy. She is leaving to pursue other opportunities.

Fellow black executive, vice president Dave Bozeman, is also leaving the online giant.
