Lidl is more than tripling its plant-based range across the UK, following a 12% rise in demand over the past year.

The discounter’s new Vemondo! Plant Based range will be rolled out to selected stores from this month before a national rollout in January and will include 21 new products.

The expanded range will feature a variety of plant-based alternatives, such as burgers, sausages, mince and nuggets.

Lidl GB chief commercial officer Richard Bourns said: “We’re investing heavily in British farming to ensure that our suppliers are set up for future growth whilst standing behind the planetary health diet.

“We’re becoming the first UK retailer to set specific plant-based protein targets, with a commitment to breaking down key barriers that currently exist, ensuring that more customers can afford to make healthy and sustainable choices.”

It comes as the grocer pledges to ensure it offers “market leading prices for plant-based products,” as it seeks to enhance choices for shoppers to give them “more options to suit their dietary requirements”.

Lidl also said it was committing to doubling its proportion of sales of plant-based protein from dairy alternatives during the same period.

Last year, the German discounter looked to cut back on its animal-based products under a sustainability push.

It said vegan alternatives were expected to slowly replace animal-based products, in line with its commitment to increase its plant-based range through 2025 and beyond.
