David Magliano has been appointed as the new Brand Director of mutually-owned business group The Co-operative, it was announced today.

In his new role Magliano will be responsible for developing the Co-op‘s brand across all of its operations, including retail and pharmacy, reporting directly to Group Marketing Director Gill Barr.

Starting out in advertising roles, the new recruit progressed to become Director of Sales & Marketing at two airlines; easyJet and Go.

Barr commented: “David is a high calibre, proven marketeer and his appointment underlines the importance we are attaching to the further development of our brand within the UK.

“These are exciting times for The Co-operative in terms of maintaining the momentum we‘ve seen in recent years and delivering plans which are anchored around meeting customers‘ needs. David will play a key role in this and we are delighted that he is joining us.”

Co-op has recently made significant head office redundancies in order to streamline its business, and in grocery it has been struggling for sales of late with like-for-like trading down 3.38 per cent in the eight weeks to February 25th 2012.

Magliano is certainly used to a challenge however, having been Director of Marketing for the successful London Olympics 2012 campaign, of which he received an MBE for his efforts, and then subsequently headed up Commercial & Marketing for the ultimately unsuccessful England 2018 World Cup bid.

In his new role the new Co-op director will be expected to oversee digital media, social media and sponsorship along with his main brand and communication responsibility.

Commenting on his appointment Magliano said: “I‘ve been presented with a fantastic opportunity to shape and communicate the Co-operative brand across a range of businesses to a multitude of audiences, each with their own needs and expectations.

“I look forward to ensuring that this distinctive brand realises its full potential across all communication channels.”
