Upmarket grocery retailer Waitrose has today announced the hiring of Asda‘s Cheryl Millington as new IT Director for the company.

Millington will succeed Kevin Berry, who retired earlier in the month following 35 years with the John Lewis Partnership.

Coming to the role with a wealth of expertise from the grocery sector, Millington most recently operated as Chief Information Officer at competitor Asda, a role she has worked in since 2009 as well as being a member of American parent company Walmart‘s Global IT Executive board.

At HBOS plc, now Lloyds Banking Group, Millington spent five years in a number of roles including Director of Group Programmes and Managing Director of the Retail Branch Network.

Mark Price, Waitrose Managing Director, believes the new hiring is a prominent one in such a developing area of the business.

“Effective use of IT is already of massive importance to our business and will become ever more so as we grow and as technology opens up new possibilities,” he explained.

“Cheryl is incredibly well qualified to lead us in this.”

Earlier today, the grocer reported an increase in online sales due to ongoing bad weather, with like-for-like sales across its online platform rising 38.4 per cent.
