Shopping centre Westfield is planning to build Britain‘s biggest indoor ski slope next to its Olympic Park shopping centre in east London, London Mayor Boris Johnston has revealed.

The retail group will submit a planning application to the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) by the end of the summer for a major leisure attraction on the site.

Johnson announced the plans at a City Hall event to mark the first anniversary of the London 2012 Olympics, according to the Financial Times.

The new ski centre will be more than double the size of other ski facilities in the UK and be comparable in size to the 400m slope at Ski Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The application is also expected to include plans for retail, hotel and restaurant developments.

Johnson said: “Stratford‘s status as a stunning new destination is confirmed by Westfield‘s plans for a world-class indoor ski centre. This underscores the massive confidence in this area from investors which is delivering a real pay back for taxpayers in terms of jobs and the regeneration of East London.”
