Superdrug posts 1.5% like-for-like Christmas sales rise

Health and Beauty retailer Superdrug has posted a modest increase in sales over the Christmas period, as sales of One Direction‘s perfume ‘Our Moment‘ helped sustain growth.

Make-up and perfume enjoyed strong sales as like-for-like sales nudged up 1.5 per cent for the nine weeks to 28 December.

Superdrug, which opened its first store on Putney High Street nearly 50 years ago, said it sold 1.7m bottles of various fragrances over the festive period.

Joey Wat, Superdrug managing director said the figures showed a “solid performance” during “challenging times.”

“Adding interest to our high street stores with beauty services, while also investing in the refurbishing of the store estate, sees us return to positive like for like annual growth in 2013, with Christmas trading offering a sparkling end to the year,” he added.

Meanwhile, rival The Fragrance Shop posted an 8.1 per cent sales surge for the five weeks to 28 December.
