Notonthehighstreet announces new chairman

82, the online platform for independent retailers, has appointed retail heavyweight Darren Shapland as its new chairman.

Shapland currently chairs Poundland, Topps Tiles and Maplin Electronics and is also a non-executive director at Ladbrokes and Wolseley.

Between 2012 and 2013, he was Carpetright‘s Boss and prior to that, held several senior roles at Sainsbury‘s.

Commenting on his new position, Shapland said: “I am fascinated by successful retail and e-commerce organisations and this really is one of the pioneers in its field and a true champion of small, creative businesses and entrepreneurs.”

CEO Simon Belsham, who until recently was head of Tesco‘s online operations, added: “This is an exciting day for us. Darren‘s significant track record and CV speak for themselves and we look forward to welcoming him to the board of 

His career experience and passion for retail will be beneficial to our business and the next phase in our ambitious growth plans.”

Last week the e-tailer secured a £6m startup loan from the Silicon Valley bank to fund expansion.
