Sandwiches performing better than stationary at WH Smith

News

Book and stationery retailer WH Smith is benefitting from its new ‘Food to Go‘ range as its travel business goes from strength to strength, but its high street business lets the side down.

The company said in a trading update that in-station travel stores, selling newspapers to British commuters, rose 4% in the 13 weeks to May 30 while the high street stores were down 4% on last year.

“We will continue to focus on profitable growth and cash generation while investing in new opportunities in both travel and High Street that position us well for the future” said WH Smith

In its half year report last month, the retailer said cutting costs was a “core part” of its strategy and today it reassured investors that the cost savings are in line with that strategy.
