Barnsley Market opens amid town centre refurbishment scheme

The refurbished Barnsley Market has opened its doors to the public, marking a major milestone of a wider £150 million refurbishment scheme for the town centre.

The newly redesigned market building is the first piece in the Glass Works retail and leisure scheme, which includes new retail and mixed use amenities being delivered by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and development manager Queensberry.

The new Barnsley Market – which received its original Royal Charter in 1249 and has been a historic mainstay in the community for centuries – comprises of a series of interlinked market halls across two floors.

The Glass Works is located on a 3.8ha site around Cheapside and is part of a wider town cente regeneration that is scheduled for completion in May 2020.
