Marks & Spencer has launched a new rental collection with Hirestreet, in the platform’s biggest ever retailer collaboration.

The M&S spring collection will land on Hirestreet just in time for Easter with clothing designed for holidays, staycations and events, available to rent from £10.

The collection is made up of 40 new season womenswear pieces from M&S’s in-house brands Autograph and Per Una, as well as from M&S Collection for the first time.

The retailer will launch 16 looks this week and will add additional new styles throughout the spring summer season.

Since its launch on the platform in November last year, M&S has worked with Hirestreet to test and learn clothing rental behaviours and found that although the rental is typically associated with formal dressing, 53% of Hirestreet customers rented the retailer’s products for casual social events.

M&S’ spring rental offer now includes trousers and jackets.

The retailer has been the platform’s most popular brand for a “bundle” rental, which  allows customers to select three different outfits for a 30-day rental period for £50, since its launch on the website. A quarter of all Hirestreet bundle orders contained at least one M&S product.

The most popular rental item in M&S autumn winter rental collection was its M&S x Ghost satin midi wrap dress, which was rented more than 30 times, which the retailer said outperformed other rental items by over three times.

M&S managing director of clothing and home Richard Price said: “At M&S our focus is ensuring our product is more relevant, more often for our customers’ lives – that’s not just what we offer but how.

“We know customers are increasingly interested in the circular economy and rental which is why we started our exciting partnership with Hirestreet last year. The feedback so far has been great with Hirestreet users discovering the everyday style and value of our clothing on the platform.”

Hiretreet strategy lead Rosie Hartman added that M&S had proven popular ever since it launched on the platform.

“Clothing rental is often associated with special occasions, but the popularity of M&S clothes, many of which are versatile for any occasion, demonstrates how the future of fashion rental is changing – today rental fashion is more than just providing temporary access to designer items,” Hartman said.

M&S’s partnership with Hirestreet is part of M&S’ commitment to drive the circular economy as part of its Plan A programme target to become a Scope 3 net zero business by 2040.

According to The M&S Family Matters Index Report, over a third of consumers now consider the climate crisis when purchasing clothes.
