These results mean the business is set to hail its second bumper Christmas performance in a row at its food division after sales last year grew by a similar amount.

The Kantar figures have been circulated among top food industry executives and reveal a clear division between the businesses holding their own and those falling behind.

Sales at Tesco and Sainsbury’s rose by 8.5% and 8.4% respectively over the four weeks as Waitrose increased by just 1.5%, but Morrisons fell.

M&S is set to reveal how it fared on Thursday, unveiling figures across food and fashion.

I’m very dubious of any trade update as inflation will be pushing up revenue and LFL sales so it’s not a true reflection of things.

I do somewhat agree Daniel. It’s very hard to draw any comparison against LFL with the current inflation pressures.
However what I would say is with M&S potentially posting figures 2% ahead of it’s competition, it does look like they have indeed had a bumper Christmas.

It would be good to see the transaction numbers!

The food offered by M&S is exceptionally good. The factor with ALL food sales sector players is inflation. How much growth would there be on the top line if you discount inflation?

This goes also for the GDP number. GDP has actually collapsed and is inflated to flatter to deceive. In effect, the ONS inflation stats for the UK are fiction.

M&S have diversified enough out of the UK market to be robust. In the case of ALL other UK-dependent retailers, I’d dump them and run.
