Currys launches ‘Green Friday’ sale encouraging Brits to shop responsibly

Currys is launching a new savings event, combining both Green Friday and Black Friday together “to unite sustainability with immense deals.”

A first for the UK’s largest electrical retailer, it said the Green Friday sale launching this October will feature savings on over 140 tech savvy home appliances, all helping to reduce energy usage while also lowering household energy bills.

Despite a new survey revealing 90% of Brits consider energy efficiency as the biggest deal-breaker when buying home appliances, 69% are yet to take the leap in a bid to help keep energy bills low.

To help beat the bills, 29% of people are also switching off all appliances when not in use to help combat rising energy prices – despite washing machines and kettles continuing to draw power even when switched off.

The top of the list of appliances people are keen to replace with a more cost-effective option include tumble dryers (32%), ovens (31%) and kettles (29%).

Ahead of Black Friday, the business is waiving the usual £30 fee to pick up and recycle customers’ old, unwanted appliances and instead paying them to recycle it, regardless of whether it works or not.

Until October 31, customers can also get free recycling and an extra £10 off when buying selected products included in the sale, with an additional saving of £40 on top of the Green Friday deal prices.

Currys group environment manager David Ville said: “We know e-waste is a growing worry for customers, with 75% of the nation saying they’re concerned about e-waste, this includes anything with plugs, cords and electronic components. As such, Currys is committed to helping people make more sustainable decisions when it comes to choosing their home appliances.”
