Amazon ‘blocks’ promotions for staff who don’t return to the office

Amazon is refusing to promote staff who do not follow its hybrid working policy of returning to the office for a minimum of three days a week.

The online giant updated its guidelines last month, informing managers that they can dismiss staff refusing to follow the mandate.

In a new internal memo, seen by Business Insider, employees who do not comply will need approval from a vice-president otherwise their career progression will be blocked.

Staff were told: “Managers own the promotion process, which means it is their responsibility to support your growth through regular conversations and stretch assignments, and to complete all required inputs for a promotion.

“If your role is expected to work from the office 3+ days a week and you are not in compliance, your manager will be made aware and VP approval will be required.”

Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy has been vocal about this importance of face-to-face times among his teams.

However, the online giant has faced a backlash from its own staff with almost 30,000 employees petitioning in March to drop the hybrid working policy.

They argued that the guidelines “undermine the diverse, accessible future that we want to be a part of”. The petition was rejected.
