Sainsbury’s teams up with Costa to open cafes in UK supermarkets

Sainsbury’s is joining forces with Costa Coffee to launch new café experiences for shoppers across the UK.

The coffee chain is set to invest more than £3m to open 11 cafés in Sainsbury’s stores during 2024, featuring a new modern design.

The move is set to create over 100 new jobs with training opportunities available for team members, said Costa.

The first café opened earlier this month in Sainsbury’s Farlington superstore in Portsmouth, creating nine new jobs.

The collaboration builds on Costa’s ongoing partnership with the grocery giant, which has seen more than 1,000 Costa Express machines in its stores and petrol stations which sold 10m cups of coffee in 2023.

Sainsbury’s director of fresh food Richard Crampton said: “We know that customers like the convenience of being able to stop for a drink, snack or sit-down lunch while they’re doing their shopping, and we think that Costa Coffee stores will offer a fantastic opportunity to do this within Sainsbury’s supermarkets.

“That’s why we’re delighted to be building on our existing collaboration with Costa Coffee to roll out this fantastic new option for customers in our stores over the next year and we’re looking forward to hearing what they think.”

The supermarket recently unveiled its new strategy update, dubbed “Next Level Sainsbury’s” where it set out how it would boost profits by putting food, Nectar card and convenience first – along with a new set of £1bn cost savings.

Building on the momentum of its previous “Food First” plan, Sainsbury’s chief executive Simon Roberts claimed the plan would help take it to the next level, noting it was “just at the beginning of rediscovering quite what this business is capable of”.
