Matalan integrates generative AI tool for enhanced product marketing

Matalan has become the UK’s first retailer to launch a generative AI tool to create its product descriptions.

The fashion and home specialist has partnered with digital consultancy Kin + Carta to integrate the new GenAI and Large Language model tool, which creates product descriptions for items listed on its website.

The GenAI model uses the product metadata and imagery to produce detailed descriptions of Matalan’s range.

The retailer said its copywriters will continue to oversee descriptions to ensue a “crucial human touch” whilst improving search engine optimisation, conversion rates and efficiency.

Matalan said the new tool forms an important part of its digital transformation journey and is the first of many initiatives it has planned to improve its online offer.

The retailer’s chief customer and omnichannel officer Ali Jones said: “As the UK’s first retailer to be leveraging Generative AI in this way, this is a hugely exciting moment for Matalan.

“Not only does it demonstrate innovation into new and so far unexplored areas, but it shows our commitment to putting our customers and the shopping experience first – whether they’re shopping on our website or through the Matalan app.

“This all ladders up to our ambitious business transformation, so it’s a proud moment to be announcing this industry-first, today”.
