M&S has been caught using a bottle of wine from Aldi to promote garden furniture on its website.

The discounter, which has been sued twice by M&S over its copycat products, took to x – formerly Twitter – to poke fun at the fashion and home retailer for placing its £7.49 bottle of Specially Selected Côtes De Provence Blanc in a product photo.

It posted a screenshot of the M&S online listing for its £669 Roma Four-Seater Garden Table and Chairs, with the caption “Marks and Spencer drink Aldi wine pass it on”.

The bottle of white wine can be found on Aldi’s website, but is currently out of stock, while its Côtes De Provence Rosé also sold out on Tuesday after the social media post.

The post, which has been viewed more than 1.2m times, has amused shoppers with one commenting: “It’s not just any wine, it’s Al Di wine”.

Another said: “If only they’d bought their garden furniture from Aldi then they might be able to afford a Marks and Spencer bottle of wine.”

An M&S spokesman told The Telegraph: “Sometimes you regret asking guests to BYOB – this one is fine for a prop but if you’d prefer to enjoy a top-quality bottle of award-winning rosé with your new garden furniture, we’d recommend our gorgeously fruity and aromatic Collection Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire rosé – an absolute must for lovers of pink drinks in the sunshine!”
