Lidl is opening its stores an hour later than usual the day after the European Football Championship final this weekend, regardless of the match outcome.

The special adjustment will come into play on Monday 15 July following the match between England and Spain taking place in Berlin on Sunday 14 July, to allow staff to enjoy post-match celebrations.

The supermarket joins Tesco in altering its opening hours for the Euros, with the UK’s largest grocer set to close its Express stores early on Sunday ahead of England playing in the Euro 2024 finals.

Lidl GB CEO Ryan McDonnell said: “We know how much this game means to England fans, and we want to ensure that our colleagues have the chance to celebrate such a significant moment in English football history.

“We couldn’t achieve our goals without our colleagues, so in recognition of their hard work and dedication, this move will allow them to join in the excitement and show support for the England team, and we wish them the best of luck for the big game.”

Normal hours are set to resume at the German grocery giant the following day on Tuesday 16 July.

Lidl encouraged shoppers to double check their nearest Lidl hours via its online locator due to opening times varying from store to store.
