M&S is accelerating its store rotation and renewal programme, with 16 new, nine extended and 12 renewed shops planned to open this financial year.

The new stores, which represent £300m of investment, will feature the latest signature M&S format, with bright entrances, wider aisles and modern shelf displays.

The stores comprise of 12 food halls in Bell Green Sydenham, Abingdon, Cannock and Farnham, two new full line stores in Bath Southgate and Bristol Cabot Circus, and two outlets.

Additionally, the food and fashion specialist will renew 12 and extend nine existing stores, in a bid to bring a wider range of products to customers on a variety of shopping missions.

Over the last year, the retailer has signed 47 deals for new and renewed stores to open by FY2028, making it more than the previous three years combined.

M&S aims to have 180 full line stores and 420 food halls by the end of FY2028.

More than 300 new locations are being considered by the business for new stores across the UK.

M&S CEO Stuart Machin said: “This year we are stepping up the pace of our programme and investing over £300m to rotate and renew stores across the country.

“We have a rigorous strategy to make sure we have the right stores in the right places, and this year we will deliver 37 new and renewed stores with the best of our food, fashion and home and beauty to our 32 million customers.”

The store rotation plans follow M&S reporting that it was set to bring its newest store concept to Merry Hill last week, consolidating its existing stores into a 93,000sq ft anchor site as part of a major investment at the West Midlands shopping centre.

The revamped store, which is set to open during late 2025, will house the company’s latest design, a larger Foodhall, an expanded clothing and home offer and a new standalone M&S café located within the mall.
